| The Luncheon was
not just about honoring those within the CBAPP community, but more
importantly, allowing students listen to these leaders' instructional
and inspirational speeches. From left, Michael Christensen, Port of Los

Inaugural Awards Luncheon Celebrates College’s
Collective Achievements
On Nov. 1, Dean Jim Strong hosted the inaugural College of Business
Administration and Public Policy Awards Luncheon in the newly expanded Loker
Student Union Ballroom. As the first event of its kind for the college, it
served as a fitting opportunity to bring together and celebrate everyone who
makes the college what it is today: students, faculty, alumni, the Dean’s
Advisory Board, and three special awardees from within the CBAPP community.
Beyond just another event, it provided a meaningful and critical way for the
Advisory Board members to get involved and raised money for future
scholarships – more than any other event has raised in the college’s
history.

10 Questions…on the
Extended Reach of the Credit Crisis for Prakash Dheeriya
In a
“10 Questions” that appeared in last year’s October issue of The Report,
Prakash Dheeriya, professor of accounting and finance, warned of the impending
credit crisis sparked by a rash of sub-prime mortgage foreclosures. To say he
was right- on may be the understatement of 2007 as the credit crisis could be
considered the single largest news story of the year. Yet as the firing of some
top finance industry CEOs and a softening of the entire U.S. economy suggests,
the credit crisis has had effects extending much further than the housing
market. Here, Dheeriya looks back and ahead to detail the reasons for the
crisis’s far-reaching impact and what he thinks is in store in the years to
come.

Baker and Briggs-Wroten
Represent CBAPP with Student Research Day Honors
Jonny Baker and
Tigress Briggs-Wroten received awards as a part of CSUDH’s annual Student
Research Day last month. The event, which was first developed and still
chaired by Professor of Computer Information Systems Mohammad Eyadat, offers
CSUDH students an opportunity to share their research or creative projects
in front of peers and faculty. The winners then go on to a CSU-wide
competition that will be held in May 2008 at CSU East Bay. Assistant
professors of public administration Elana Koulikov and Frank Papa served as
the faculty advisors for Baker and Briggs-Wroten respectively.

Newsmakers
Natasa Christodoulidou,
assistant professor of management,
published a journal article with co-authors Pearl Brewer and Cary Countryman
in the fall issue of the Journal of Information Technology and
Tourism. The article dealt with the
differences between the users of travel intermediaries such as Travelocity
and Expedia. The journal article led Travelmole.com, an online forum and
trade publication for the hospitality industry with 750,000 users, to
publish a “Breaking News” story on the professors’ findings.
Richard Malamud, professor of
accounting and finance, had his article,
“AICPA Adopts New Standards for Valuation,” published in the Dec. 1 issue of
the Elder Client Planner. The
article explains the type of engagements that fall within the new standards
of practice. They are applicable to all members of the AICPA, not just those
who hold separate valuation certification. These rules apply beginning
January 1, 2008. Thus, all members who perform valuations must obtain
sufficient expertise to properly perform these services for their clients. A
common example of the application of the standards would be a CPA who
prepares an estate tax return and as part of that engagement also values the
decedent's business or partnership interests.
Senior
Ernesto Marinez Jr., business
administration, was welcomed into CSUDH’s fifth cohort of the Ronald E.
Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program last month. The McNair program was
established in the name of the late NASA mission specialist who perished in the
1986 Space Shuttle Challenger explosion. The program’s goal is to encourage and
prepare students who are traditionally under-represented in college to pursue
graduate studies – specifically, the Ph.D.
Sang Ok Choi, assistant professor of
public administration and public policy, and graduate student
Carol Jacobson, M.P.A., co-authored an article that was
recently accepted for publication. The article, titled "Success Factors: Public
Works and Public-Private Partnerships," will appear in Volume 21 of the
International Journal of Public Sector Management.
