When Cynthia Banks took over as director of the Los Angeles County Department of Community and Senior Services in 2004, employees felt a deeply embedded mistrust of management, the state was demanding $60 million in disallowed funds back from the department, and the most egregious misdeeds were even splashed across the pages of the L.A. Times. In the five years since, she has gradually turned the 450-staff department around, reflected by two of the department’s programs receiving recent national awards. Here, her details on what’s needed to turn a poisoned culture in the public sector into a thriving one and how to be a new sheriff in town while still being respected and liked serves as a cheat sheet for other managers on how to instill such a change in culture. BP will be recognized as Organization of the Year; Debra Reed, president and CEO of San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas Company, will be honored as Executive of the Year; and Gilbert Ivey , chief administrative officer of The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California will be given the Alumni of the Year award. Schwarzenegger Announces Solar Energy Partnership at CSUDH With CSUDH and its 525-kilowatt solar electric parking canopy as a backdrop, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced on Tuesday that the state has partnered with SunEdison to provide affordable solar power at 15 California State University (CSU) campuses and the CSU Chancellor’s Office. Full story Students and Donors Praised at LSU Donor Wall Unveiling On Sept. 18, the campus community gathered to unveil the Loker Student Union (LSU) Donor Wall. Many who contributed to both the original campaign begun in 1968 to build a student union and to the $34.3 million expansion that was completed in 2007 were present for the celebration. Full story NewsmakersGus Martin, professor of public administration and associate vice president of faculty affairs, had his book, Understanding Terrorism: Challenges, Perspectives, and Issues, reviewed as one of the top 40 books in the world on the subject of terrorism in the September/October issue of ForeWord. ForeWord is a bi-monthly magazine published to inform and impact librarians’ choices in what books to consider for their shelves.
