Palladini’s Experience Underscores Significance of Growing Criminal Justice Field
As a federal law enforcement officer for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for 30 years, Marie Palladini saw the field of criminal justice change drastically. Yet, perhaps the biggest change took place over the past five years with the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security and the escalation of identity theft. 10 Questions…on Dubai’s Emergence for Tayyeb Shabbir
In the past few years, Dubai has debuted an indoor ski resort – in the middle of the desert, a string of manmade islands sticking out into the Persian Gulf that collectively look like a palm tree from the air, plans to build the largest building in the world, and most recently, a bid for a 20 percent stake in the NASDAQ stock exchange. In terms of breakneck economic growth, it may be at the center of the world. So where did this boom time come from? Why now? And, why to such bizarre extremes? Here, Associate Professor of Finance Tayyeb Shabbir, an internationally recognized expert on emerging economies, explains. Full story

Newsmakers
Robert Dowling, emeritus professor of management, retired in October after more than 34 years of service to CSUDH. Dowling served as CBAPP interim dean preceding the appointment of Dean Jim Strong and moved the College’s efforts forward in receiving AACSB accreditation, increasing enrollment, and continuing to enrich students’ lives and help them move on to successful careers.

Raoul Freeman, professor and chair of information systems, was recently re-elected for a 14th year as chairman of the Information Systems Commission of Los Angeles County. Freeman is the only academician serving on the board, and no one has ever been re-elected for this many successive terms in the commission’s history. A 10-member body appointed by the Board of Supervisors, the Commission provides counsel and oversight to the county's information technology activities, which have an annual budget in excess of $750 million. Topics that have been on the agenda of the Commission recently have included IT governance, the cost effectiveness of e-government services, IT security, and enterprise resource planning.

Larry Press, professor of information systems, was quoted as an expert source on an Oct. 24 program of “The World,” a BBC World Service radio program co-produced by WGBH public radio in Boston and aired on 240 stations on the public radio network in the United States. Press was sought out for his expertise on Internet connectivity in Cuba to provide insight on President Bush’s comments about providing Internet access and computers for Cuba’s citizens. Press has spent time researching Internet connectivity in Cuba, and reported that the country has the lowest percentage of people using the Internet in the Caribbean.
