Public/Private Partnerships for Bill Peterson
As the general manager of the Home Depot Center (HDC), Bill Peterson not only
directs the day-to-day operations of the $150-million sports complex located on
campus that opened in June 2003, he is also the point person for all partnership
efforts with the University. Here, he gives an update on the partnership and
provides some general advice for other people considering venturing into such a
relationship.

Frank Strier, professor of accounting and law, first researched and
wrote about business ethics in the wake of Watergate in the 1970s. Today, with
the snowballing of corporate governance scandals, he examines why we continue to
see new scandals, how a controversial new FASB proposal will impact companies’

Faculty and Staff Invest in LSU Expansion
On Sept. 23,
faculty and staff came together to learn about and donate to the Loker Student
Union (LSU) expansion during the Legacy Party, an event held to celebrate and
pledge support to the new student union. Faculty and staff contributed $31,274
during the event, which, combined with previous pledges of $20,075, brings their
total commitment to $51,349.

Powell
Named New Basketball Coach
Damaine Powell was recently announced as the new head coach of the Men’s
Basketball Program. For the last seven years, he coached at nearby Compton
Community College in a highly successful program.

Newsmakers
Prakash Dheeriya,
professor of finance and quantitative systems,
presented a paper, titled “Terrorism and Financial Markets: An Analysis,” at the
International Academy of Business & Economics annual conference in Las Vegas,
Oct. 17-20. Business professionals, policymakers, academicians and students from
around the world attended the conference.
Senior Daniel
Gardner, history and political science, recently began his 10-week
internship with the Leon and Sylvia Panetta
Institute for Public Policy in Washington, D.C. The program gives students a
hands-on look into the inner-workings of national and international government.
In addition to staffing a congressional office, Gardner has had the opportunity
to hear speakers such as Senator Hillary Clinton (D-New York) and White House
Chief of Staff Andy Card.
Richard Malamud,
professor of accounting and
law, had his article, “Full
pre-retirement income is not necessary in retirement years,” published in the
October issue of Elder Client Planner, a monthly newsletter for lawyers,
accountants and financial planners. The piece discusses why less income is
needed during retirement to produce the same after-tax cash flow that the
taxpayer had while working, due to the fact that they no longer have to pay
Social Security and Medicare taxes or the income tax on those taxes.
Kimberly Perttula,
assistant professor of management,
presented her research on “passion for one’s work” at the South Bay Economic
Forecast Conference on Oct. 20 in Torrance. Passion within the workplace is an
emerging area of study within the fields of management and organizational
behavior, which Perttula has helped forge through her continuing research first
begun as a graduate student at USC.
Larry Press,
professor of computer information systems,
served as the chairman of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
Digital Bridges Symposium, held in Busan, Korea, Sept. 10-11. He also delivered
a presentation during the conference, titled “Measuring and Reducing the Digital
Divide.” As the chairman, Press will publish a report on the symposium later
this month.
Alumna
Rita Faith Scott
(B.S. Business Management, 1999) graduated from the Fashion
Institute of Design and Merchandising and established Double Occupancy, a
stylish maternity clothing line in 2002. She is donating maternity outfits to
the wives of men currently serving in the military. Her future plans include a
mentoring program for young women at risk to teach them how to become fashion
designers.
Myron Sheu,
assistant professor of information systems,
won the Best E-Commerce Paper Award from the Western Business and Management
Association at the association’s annual conference held in Las Vegas, Oct.
10-12. The paper, co-authored with J. He of Fairfield University and titled,
“Measured Decision Support for Online Customers,” will be published in the
Journal of Business Management and Change.
Ricardo Ulivi,
professor of finance
and quantitative systems,
published a paper, titled “Devaluation and Real Estate Values: The Argentine
Case,” in Real Estate Issues, a refereed journal. The article discusses
the impact of major currency devaluation on real estate assets in Argentina.
