Seven New Faculty Members Spark Generational Shift CSUDH was founded in 1965, and many of the professors hired in the University’s early years went on to devote their entire careers to the institution (see The Report’s January 2005 issue). Yet this fall, as many move into well deserved retirements they’ve made room for a new generation of young tenure-track faculty members who will lead CBAPP into a new era. “It’s always a give and take,” says Dean James Strong of the turnover. “You lose a lot of great experience, but at the same time, these young faculty are some of the best and brightest in the country. In the first month I’ve already heard from several departments how they’re making an impact by bringing new ideas, cutting-edge teaching techniques, and generally, new life to the college.” The generational shift won’t stop there, either. CBAPP is currently recruiting for eight more tenure-track positions across all of the College’s disciplines. Many of these new professors have lived and studied all over the world – from Russia to India to Japan. In a world that continues to get smaller with globalization playing a critical role in industry and public policy, their experiences will contribute valuable international perspectives in the classroom and in their research. A quick glimpse at CBAPP’s new professors:
Public Policy Sang Ok Choi has already published five papers in refereed journal publications, a staggering number at this point in his career. He received his Ph.D. from Florida State University and will pursue research interests in examining social networks in the public sector as well as emergency preparedness and management. Elena Koulikov recently completed her Ph.D. from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Administration at Syracuse University, widely regarded as one of the best schools for public policy and public administration in the country. Originally from Russia, she holds a second Ph.D. in U.S. and Canadian History from the Russian Academy of the Sciences. For her dissertation at Syracuse, she researched the driving patterns of the elderly in America. Vandana Prakash received her Ph.D. from the School of Policy, Planning, and Development at the University of Southern California and investigated the essential features of federalism in India for his dissertation. She will teach courses dealing with public management, organizational behavior, federalism, and intergovernmental relations. Business
Administration Hamid Pourmohammadi will be deeply involved in CBAPP’s new program in global logistics and supply chain management program through the Information Systems and Operations Management Department. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering and built a strong network of contacts with professors at both USC and UCLA through his research in transportation management and supply chain management and logistics. Bingsheng Yi received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern Florida in finance this past year. He joins the Accounting and Finance Department with particular research interests in the role of information production and investor perception for security offerings such as stocks and bonds as well as various elements of new initial public offerings (IPOs). He will teach courses in financial markets. |
