Seven
New Faculty Members Spark Generational Shift
CSUDH was founded in 1965,
and many of the professors hired in the University’s early years went on to
devote their entire careers to the institution (see The Report’s
January 2005 issue). Yet this fall, as many move into well
deserved retirements they’ve made room for a new generation of young
tenure-track faculty members who will lead CBAPP into a new era.

10 Questions…on L.A. Emergency
Preparedness for Don Knabe
With clogged
freeways, the very real risks of fires, floods, and earthquakes, and the
potential terrorist targets of LAX and the ports, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
caused many Southern Californians to wonder “what if.” In 2002, Los Angeles
County Supervisor Don Knabe was appointed to President Bush’s State and Local
Officials Senior Advisory Committee to the President’s Homeland Security
Advisory Council. Here, he details what he thinks went wrong on the Gulf Coast
and the steps Los Angeles is taking to make sure nothing like that happens here. Full story
On Point: The Changing Face of
Retirement
Twenty years ago,
people may have been able to put in their time and walk away at 65 year’s old
with a hefty nest egg that would see them through retirement. Unfortunately, as
Professor of Finance Ricardo Ulivi explains, that’s no longer the case. He
details here why the golden years may not shimmer as brightly as they used to
and what you need to do to make sure you’re still taken care of.

Alumni Invited
“Home,” October 7-8
Homecoming starts
Friday, Oct. 7 with a soccer double-header followed by an evening with fellow
alumni and President James E. Lyons, Sr. at the Penthouse Skybox at the Radisson
Hotel at LAX. The annual Homecoming Barbecue will be held in campus’ Sculpture
Garden on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Poli Sci Senior
Participates in Panetta Institute Internship in D.C.
Senior
Mark Mussari, political science, recently participated in a two-week
orientation before leaving for Washington, D.C. for the Panetta Institute’s
Annual Congressional Internship Program. Mussari is one of 24 students from
California involved in the program.

Campus Welcomes
Students Affected by Hurricane Katrina
CSUDH is one of
seven CSU campuses to accept displaced students from Louisiana, Mississippi and
Alabama for the fall semester. As of last month, 22 students affected
by the natural disaster had enrolled.

Los Angeles Business Opportunity Expo
If you have your
own company or are interested in finding out how you can do business with
various contractors and the Port of Los Angeles, the port and CSUDH Office of
Alumni Relations invite you to a business expo, held Nov. 1 from 5–7 p.m. on
campus in Extended Education Room EE1213.

In Memoriam:
Mike Sharp
Memorial services
were held Sept. 10 in Corona, California, for Mike Sharp (Class of ’96, B.A.,
Business), former assistant golf coach, and a former student-athlete who was
honored with the CSUDH Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in his senior year.
Sharp was killed Sept. 6 while at his job at a car dealership.

MPA Gets High Marks from Accreditation Board
The Commission on
Peer Review and Accreditation for the National Association of Schools of Public
Affairs and Administration has renewed support for CBAPP’s Master’s in Public
Administration. The board reviewed CBAPP’s annual report at their June meeting.
Newsmakers
Jeff Badrtalei, associate dean, was appointed director of the
Applied Studies Program last month by President James E. Lyons, Sr. Badrtalei
was also awarded tenure and the rank of associate professor of applied studies.
Prakash Dheeriya,
professor of information systems and operations management, was
recently appointed to the Editorial Board of the International Journal of
Applied Management and Technology. The journal is an international peer-reviewed
journal in the field of applied management and technology in all sectors of
society.
Vandana Prakash, assistant professor of public administration,
presented a paper, titled,
"Environmental Management in Indian Federalism: Inter-Jurisdictional and Inter-Sectoral
Dynamics," at the Indian Institute of Management’s Third Conference on Public
Policy and Management, in Bangalore, India, Sept. 23-25. She also chaired a
panel on "Organizational and Inter-Organizational Capacity Building" at the
Eighth Public Management Research Conference, which is sponsored by the Public
Management Research Association, the parent organization for the Journal of
Public Administration Research and Theory. The conference was held at the
University of Southern California, Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.
