Newsmakers Iris A. Baxter, assistant professor of public administration and public policy, presented a paper, titled "Teamwork Assessment: Perceptions from a School of Business and Public Administration" at the Academy of Business Administration's 2004 International Conference in London in July. She also chaired a panel discussion called "Strategic Actions in Public Administration." Prakash Dheeriya, professor of finance & quantitative systems, co-authored a paper, titled "Chinese Currency: To Appreciate or Not to Appreciate, That's the Question," which won the Distinguished Research Award at the Allied Academies Conference on July 26. Dheeriya collaborated on the paper with Bala Maniam and Mei Mei of Sam Houston State University. The paper will be published in the Journal of International Business Research. Johanna Gach Saylor (B.A. Political Science, 2004) attended the Democratic National Convention in Boston in August and was subsequently featured in the Los Angeles Times Calendar section for her involvement. Gach Saylor was in Boston as an intern with The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars and received a pass to the convention by posting a request on a bulletin board used by several California delegates staying in the same hotel as her, which read “California student in need of credentials, please call.” Cecilia Moreno (M.S. Public Administration, 1997) was recently named as the 55th Assembly District’s 2004 Woman of the Year by State Assemblywoman Jenny Oropeza. Moreno works as the manager of Community Affairs for Shell Los Angeles Refinery, a department she created, and was recognized for her service to the communities served by the 55th district. She has served as a board member for the Wilmington Neighborhood Council, the Community Police Advisory Board, the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and several other organizations. Franklin Strier, professor of accounting and law, had his
article, "Stemming the Gold Rush: Public Policy Alternatives to Gene Patenting,"
accepted for publication in Business & Society Review, which is published
by the Center for Business Ethics at Bentley College.
