CBAPP Faculty: What I Did on My Summer Vacation
Short days of teaching, lots of free time, and best of all, summers off –
college professors have it made, right? Not even close. While people outside of
academia may think the work life of a college professor ends at graduation and
doesn’t pick up again until the following fall, CBAPP’s faculty members’ summer
schedules tell a different story. Here, we profile the summer work of five who
show that there isn’t much beach time on a professor’s summer agenda.

Mark McGannSince the end of October 2007, the Standard & Poor’s index is down 22 percent. But what CBAPP Advisory Board Member and AG Edwards/Wachovia Securities Senior Vice-President Mark McGann stresses is that investors can’t just look at that statistic and then get out of the market. Here, McGann, who has been in the business of investing for more than 30 years, explains some of the essentials of how to survive and thrive in a down-turning economy as well as how to take emotion out of your investment decisions. Online program was ranked one of Geteducated.com’s top five “Best Buys” for M.P.A.’s in the country. Evaluated by a national editorial review team, the ranking is based on a review of 18 competing options nationwide. For in-state students, CBAPP’s program was tallied to cost a total of $14,400. The M.P.A. Online joins the M.B.A. Online and other CSUDH programs to be recognized by Geteducated.com, which is devoted to providing resources and advice for prospective students considering an online degree. Toros Soccer Teams Begin Seasons in Pre-season Top 25 National Polls Riding the wave of success that saw the CSUDH men’s soccer team capture its unprecedented eighth CCAA Championship and both men’s and women’s teams advance to the second round of the NCAA Division II Far West Region playoffs, each squad was ranked in the top 25 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in its respective 2008 preseason poll, making the Toros the only CCAA school with both teams included in the balloting. Both teams began their season on Aug. 28. Full story NewsmakersIris Baxter, associate professor of public administration, was just appointed to the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation. NASPAA is the leading accrediting body for colleges of public affairs and administration in the country and this particular committee evaluates the accreditation self-study reports submitted by candidate schools and serves as the decision makers on awarding accreditation to master's degree programs throughout the country.Brett A. Burdick (M.P.A., 2007) was recently promoted to the position of deputy state coordinator for administration in the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. Burdick credited CBAPP’s online M.P.A. program for giving him the practical knowledge, confidence, and credentials to continue to be promoted within the agency. La Ronya Hines (B.S. business administration, 2008) recently accepted a position with the Internal Revenue Service as a tax auditor. After graduating in May, Hines begins her new role this month. She credits Professor of Accounting and Finance Richard Malamud with giving her the instruction and tools to successfully pass the IRS’s assessment test and her new job. Li-Lin “Sunny” Liu, assistant professor of accounting and finance, recently received the Outstanding Paper award at the American Accounting Association Annual Meeting, Government & Non-profit Section. Her paper was titled, “Hospital Financial Distress, Recovery and Closure: A Political Cost Perspective,” which she presented at the conference held in Anaheim, Aug. 2-6. Frank Strier, professor of accounting and finance, had his article, “Rating the Raters: Conflicts of Interest in the Credit Rating Firms,” accepted for publication in the December 2008 issue of Business and Society Review, which is regarded as one of the most prestigious business publications in the country. The paper, which focuses on conflicts of interest in the big credit rating agencies and how the inflated ratings they gave helped contribute to the sub-prime mortgage crisis. Bingsheng Yi, assistant professor of accounting and finance, had his article, “CEO Duality and Firm Performance: An Endogenous Issue,” accepted for publication in Corporate Ownership and Control, a journal in the field of corporate governance. The article’s acceptance comes on the heels of three others, all of which will be published in refereed journals, including one “A” journal, this fall.
