Ernie Klinger brought years of experience as an entrepreneur and working with small businesses into the classroom.
Klinger and Board Provide More Than Name Power
The CBAPP Business Advisory Board members have been handpicked from some of the area’s top business executives because of their desire to help CBAPP become a better college, not because their titles look good in print. In the past year, they’ve offered internships within their organizations, spoken in classes, helped write grants, met with faculty candidates, and much more. And Ernie Klinger, the board’s executive committee chairman and the chief financial officer for coffee house chain It’s A Grind, has gone even further by teaching a class last semester and developing the curriculum for a new graduate level course that he’ll teach next spring.  Full story

10 Questions...on the Rise and Fall of Unions for Frank Stricker
The last year has proven staggering for auto, steel, and other industrial unions in which they’ve made huge concessions with companies and lost many of their members to early retirement incentive plans. At the same time, unions in service industries with record numbers of immigrant and female members are thriving. Here, Frank Stricker, professor of history, and the former coordinator of the Labor Studies program within CBAPP, explains why these new unions are on the rise at the very same time their good ol’ boy industrial counterparts are feeling an unprecedented pinch.  Full story

2006 Graduates Series: Tai Ho Lee, accounting
Tai Ho Lee came to the United States from Seoul, South Korea in 2002, determined to learn English through an ESL program.
Two years later, he entered CSU Dominguez Hills with similar determination to graduate, land a job with a Big Four accounting firm, and better campus’ Accounting Society along the way.
Tai (pronounced “tay”) achieved all of that within the last few months.
He graduated in May with a 3.8 in-major grade-point average and received a job offer from Ernst and Young, where he will start next month in the audit department. As president of the Accounting Society, he also led the organization to some unprecedented achievements that will pave the way for the Big Four to look at CSUDH accounting students with newfound respect.

Newsmakers

Larry Press, professor of computer information systems, co-authored a report delivered at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in July, titled, “The Digital Divide Report: ICT Diffusion Index 2005.” The report suggests that there is a deepening digital divide between developed and developing nations, calling for publicly funded, neutral-access backbone networks with points of presence in every rural village – a similar strategy to the one used by the U.S. National Science Foundation in seeding the Internet in the late-1980s. This continues Press’s research on bringing the Internet to developing nations. Click here to read the February 2005 The Report interview with Press on the feasibility of such a project.

Ricardo Ulivi, professor of finance, was profiled in the August cover story of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, titled, “Ordinary investors, extraordinary results.” Ulivi was singled out in the national consumer publication for his ability to build his personal wealth through shrewd real estate investments on top of his employment at CSUDH and small financial advising practice.
