Meet CBAPP’s New Faculty Members
Over the course of the summer and fall, four new faculty members will join the
CBAPP ranks: (left to right) Annie Wilson, lecturer in political science; Xinmei
“Lucy” Xie, assistant professor of accounting and finance; Rhonda Whitfield,
lecturer in public administration; and Li-Lin “Sunny” Liu, assistant professor
of accounting and finance. Here, The Report takes a quick look at how all four
ended up at CSUDH, what their research and teaching interests are, and what they
like to do outside the classroom.

10 Questions…on Policing the Police for Marie
Palladini
Federal corruption charges, cops sleeping on the job while inmates run amok
– a smattering of scandals have enveloped the Orange County Sheriff’s
Department. And while police scandals are nothing new, Assistant Professor
of Criminal Justice Administration Marie Palladini thinks we’re seeing more
of them. Palladini spent 30 years in the field as a federal law enforcement
officer. Here, she discusses what the worst job in law enforcement is, what
parts of police scandals the movies get right, and why there’s more scrutiny
today on cops than ever before.

Iraq Veteran Becomes First-ever Mr.
California USA
Jeremy Buraglia, a criminal justice major within CBAPP, was named the first-ever
Mr. California USA in a pageant held on May 17 in Long Beach. The sergeant in
the Army Reserve began his studies during a 15-month deployment in Iraq, and
entered the pageant to help defer the costs of college.

Borrego Appointed to Newly
Created Enrollment Management VP Position
CSUDH President
Mildred García recently announced the selection of Susan Borrego as the
university’s first vice president for planning and enrollment management.
Two of Borrego’s primary tasks will be to develop and implement the
university's strategic enrollment plan and a comprehensive retention
program, core principles in Garcia’s vision to increase the CSUDH budget
through increased enrollment and retention. Borrego is currently the vice
president for student affairs at CSU Monterey Bay, where she has been since
2005. Her first day at CSU Dominguez Hills will be Aug.1.

Newsmakers
Richard Malamud, professor of
accounting and finance, had his article, “The
Effect of Reduced Social Security and Higher Taxes Upon the Death of a Spouse,”
published in the July 1 edition of the Elder Client Planner.
In the article, Malamud discusses how cash flow is affected upon the death of a
spouse. He details a hypothetical example in which the survivor's income is
reduced by the lower of the two social security benefits and then shows how the
income tax actually goes up, even though the taxable income goes down. He then
raises the question of how the surviving spouse should deal with this lower
income.
