Competition
continues to rise and product lifecycles continue to shorten in consumer
goods industries. Charlie Woo – the founder and CEO of Megatoys, which started
as a family-run wholesale toy company in Los Angeles in 1979 and now boasts more
than $50 million in sales – faces these realities on a daily basis. Here, he
explains how the global marketplace is only getting tougher and what he does to
stay ahead of the pack.

On Point: The
Prospect for Israeli-Palestinian Peace
Political Science
Lecturer Hamoud Salhi’s research and teaching interests focus on conflicts in
the Middle East. For many years, one of those constants has been the tenuous
relationship between Israelis and Palestinians. Yet, the election of Palestinian
Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, a recent cease-fire, and Israel’s withdrawal
from Gaza Strip settlements this month have all suggested a thaw may be eminent.
Here, Salhi explains whether such steps might actually lead to peace or if the
political and literal bombs will continue to explode.

Eyes Over Baghdad Photo Gallery (Part Three)
For the past few months, Ken Evans
(M.B.A., 2001) has whipped through the skies above Iraq in his AH-64D Apache
Longbow helicopter with B Company 3rd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division,
taking pictures along the way. In this third installment of his personal
photo gallery on the University’s news Website, he continues to provide a
unique perspective on the ongoing conflict.

Newsmakers
Guy Fox,
a member of the Business Advisory Board, recently launched Guy Fox & Associates,
an international consulting firm specializing in supply chain and logistical
issues for small- to medium-sized companies. The firm brings a strong network of
contacts in Asia and throughout North and South America.
Raoul Freeman,
professor and chair of computer information systems, presented a paper,
titled “E-Government Services: Criteria and Results,” as the lead-off speaker at
the eGovernance session of the Global Information Technology Management
Conference held in Anchorage, Alaska, June 5-7.
Richard Malamud,
professor of accounting and law, co-authored an article, titled “Is
California’s LLC Annual Fee Legal?” with Renee Rodda that appeared in the June
2005 issue of Spidell’s California Taxletter. The article dealt with the
constitutionality of a case currently awaiting trial in the San Francisco
Superior Court in which a Washington state limited liability corporation was
assessed substantial fees and taxes for registering in California, though the
company never did any business in the state.
Larry Press,
professor of computer information systems, presented a paper, titled
“Toward a Global Rural Network: Strategy and Action Plan,” at
the
Sixth Annual Global Information Technology Management Conference held in
Anchorage, Alaska, June 5-7. He also
presented on the spread of
the Internet in developing nations at the United Nations World Summit on
Information Society Thematic Meeting on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships for
Bridging the Digital Divide on June 23 in Seoul, Korea.
Graduating seniors
Tin Trang and Dana Shaw, both computer information systems majors,
were selected as two of 10 CSUDH students who presented at the 19th
Annual California State University Student Research Competition at CSU
Sacramento at the end of the spring semester. The 10 students were selected to
represent CSUDH during an open competition held earlier in the semester on
campus.
