African American Initiative Gets Word Out about the CSU
Three years ago, movers and shakers in the African American community got
together with Chancellor Charles Reed to discuss the flagging numbers of African
American students attending college and in particular the CSU. That meeting led
to the formation of the African American Initiative, a multi-faceted outreach
campaign driven through 56 African American mega-churches throughout the state
to inform not only prospective students but also their parents that a college
education was within reach. The results speak for themselves: the number of
enrolled African Americans system-wide jumped six percent from 11 percent in
2003/04 to 17 percent in 2006/07 and the CSU expects the numbers to continue to
rise.

10 Questions…on Marketing to Latinos for Roberto Orci
When CBAPP Advisory Board Member Roberto
Orci became a founding partner of a Latino advertising agency in 1988, the

a major market that most of the world’s top companies have tapped into. Orci
is now the president of Acento Advertising, an ad agency focused on the U.S.
Hispanic market with clients including Wells Fargo, Staples, and the
SuperValue group of supermarkets (Albertsons in SoCal). Here, he explains
why simply translating ads into Spanish won’t work and why most Fortune 500
companies are taking a hard look at this growing market segment.
