Special Graduation and Careers Issue

2006 Graduates Series: Arek
Arakelian
When
Arek Arakelian (M.B.A., concentration in finance), arrived at LAX alone from his homeland of Syria in 2003, bent on
completing a master’s degree at CSUDH, he spoke only broken English. Today, he’s
fluent in accounting, not just English, and he recently landed a full-time job
with Santa Monica-based accounting firm Gumbiner Savett, Inc. with plans to take
the CPA exam. While on campus, he served as the Accounting Society vice
president, teacher’s assistant (TA) in the M.B.A. program, volunteer tax
preparer for students and the
underprivileged, and assistant
with campus’ American Language and Culture Program.

complete his degree, a goal that he realized this year.

or candidate – you’ve got a lot of catching up to do. Here, he provides a
21st-century rundown on the process that hiring managers, new grads, and
mid-career professionals should check out to make sure they’re up to speed.

CSUDH Hosts
System-wide AACSB Accreditation Workshop
Last month, Dean Jim Strong welcomed fellow CSU business deans, faculty and
staff to campus for a day of meetings and panel discussions on the new standards
set by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the
accrediting body of which CSUDH is a candidate. In addition to providing insight
into the candidate and reaccreditation processes, the workshop served as a
poignant indicator of the benefits of collaboration within the CSU Association
of Business Deans and the CSU System.
