MPA Online Reaches
Across the Globe
CSUDH’s set of
distance learning programs is regarded as one of the most expansive and
established in the country. At the top of that list stands the MPA Online, which
brings together students who are entrenched in full-time careers around the
world. Many of these students have studied under trying conditions like a state
of siege in Bolivia, aboard a Navy ship stationed in the Middle East, and along
a tense, snow-buried border in Eastern Europe. They are only able to pull it off
because of the flexibility the program affords. Full

It may not be glitz
and glamour, but Jack Kyser, the chief economist for the Los Angeles Economic
Development Corporation, says that manufacturing plays a crucial role in the
South Bay’s economy that few recognize.

On Point: The
New Pope and the Global Community
Much has been made
of newly appointed Pope Benedict XVI’s ardent conservative past and what it will
mean for interfaith dialogue under his watch. Linda Groff, professor
of political science, who specializes in global studies – future studies,
intercultural/inter-religious dialogue, and peace and conflict resolution –
explains here how such dialogue is just one vital component of a bigger movement
toward a more globally interdependent world.

CBAPP Alumni Called to Join in Commencement Celebration
All CBAPP
alumni are encouraged to join President James E. Lyons, Sr. and the Platform
Party in leading graduates onto the field of the Home Depot Center for the 2005
Commencement Ceremony on May 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to special
parking arrangements and catching up with former classmates, alumni will be
seated in a special designated area at the front of the staging area to enjoy

Administration Celebrates Major Scholars
The 25th Annual
Public Administration Honors Banquet was held on Sunday, April 17 at Ports O’
Call Restaurant in San Pedro, recognizing outstanding academic achievements for
undergraduate and graduate students within the major.

Rookie ToroSifers
Bring Home Hardware
In
its first year on campus, CSUDH’s ToroSifers, a free enterprise student
organization dominated by CBAPP majors, brought home two trophies, Rookie of the
Year and Second Runner-Up, from the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE)
competition held April 14 at the Hyatt Regency in Los Angeles. Full story
Eyes Over Baghdad
Ken Evans
(M.B.A., 2001) was
recently deployed to Taji, Iraq, to fly an AH-64D Apache Longbow with B Company
(Killer Spades) 3rd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. View some of his photos
from his missions canvassing Baghdad and the
Green Zone (the U.S. military headquarters and media center within the city)
with his attack helicopter battalion.

Sports and
Entertainment Career Expo & Internship Fair at HDC on May 25
The Los Angeles Galaxy
and Anschutz Entertainment Group will host a career expo and internship fair at
The Home Depot Center on Wednesday, May 25 at 5 p.m. for those interested in a
career in the sports and entertainment industry. An L.A. Galaxy soccer match
will follow the fair, included in the $20 entry fee ($16 for current students).

Raoul
Freeman,
professor and chair of Information Systems,
had his paper, "The Los Angeles Experience: A Field Study of Information
Technology Issues Challenging Local Government," published in the April 2005
issue of The Journal of E-Government.
Senior
Ossama El-Batran, political science, and junior Mark Mussari,
political science, received Best Delegate awards for their presentations at the
California Model United Nations Conference held at the Queen Mary Hotel in Long
Beach on March 3. Along with 17 other members of CSU Dominguez Hills’ Model
United Nations team, they also served as delegates at the four-day American
Pacific Coast Model United Nations Confernece, held at the Biltmore Hotel in Los
Angeles, March 31-April 3. Senior political science majors Mary Cowen
and Maritza Dreux, and junior Raul Murillo, political
science, joined El-Batran and Mussari in receiving Outstanding, Distinguished,
and Research awards at the multi-day, intercollegiate conference.
Senior Tracy
Lloyd and
graduate student Sudha Prakash received the Outstanding Student
Awards, and Cynthia V. Menivar accepted the Abraam Krushkhov Memorial
Scholarship at the 25th Annual Public Administration Honors Banquet
on April 17.
Twenty-nine students were inducted into the Pi Alpha Alpha Honors Society, and
25 graduating students received recognition for honors in major. Senior
Octavio Villavencio was applauded for graduating Cum Laude. Seniors
Laurie Anderson, Todd Gaynor, Enrique Iribe, and Emilio
Salas were also recognized for graduating Magna Cum Laude.
Junior
Jaret Minami,
marketing, was recently named president of the newly formed Honors Program
Torchbearers Club, a group of student-athlete tutors who help fellow Toros
maintain their grade-point averages and represent CSUDH well on the sports
fields. The program plans to offer assistance in finite mathematics, biology,
physics and English grammar. Minami is a midfielder on the men’s soccer team.
