Feedback Just as Valuable as Cash Awards at Business Plan Contest
In late January, CBAPP and its Institute for Entrepreneurship, Small Business Development, and Global Logistics held its first-ever Business Plan Competition with 26 students submitting plans for consideration. The five winners received cash awards totaling $14,000 funded by Citibank and State Farm Insurance. It was an impressive payout of seed money to help them start the plans they laid out, yet they received much more than that by receiving real-time feedback for their business ideas from the panel of four strategically selected judges and the entire CBAPP Advisory Board. Newsmakers

Richard Malamud, professor of accounting and finance, had a letter to the editor published in the Feb. 9 issue of Tax Notes. Malamud clarified a point made by a writer in the previous issue of Tax Notes regarding estate taxes.

Franklin Strier, professor of accounting and finance, had his article “Rating the Raters: Conflicts of Interest in the Credit Rating Firms,” published in the Dec. 2008 issue of Business and Society Review. In it, Strier examined the conflict of interest at the heart of the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the form of bond-rating agencies that inflated the ratings on mortgage-backed securities to help sell the bonds. In addition, the agencies often served as consultants in designing the bonds. Strier’s article suggested reforms to the industry that could effectively eliminate such conflicts of interest.
