Five Years After Enron, An Accounting
Resurgence
In late 2001, accounting became almost a dirty word because of the
unscrupulous practices of companies such as Enron, Tyco, and WorldCom. The
Sarbanes-Oxley Act, passed by congress in 2002, has changed all of that with
the requirements for significantly increased independent audit services. The
result is an industry that has made a 180-degree turnaround where more
opportunities are available today for graduating students and mid-career
professionals than at any time in recent history.

number of businesses today. Yet, Jonathan Bowles, director of the New York-based
Center for an Urban Future and author of the recent “A World of Opportunity”
report, explains here how they’re also having an unparalleled positive impact on

Lyons Says
Goodbye, Bowman Takes Over in Interim
A farewell
reception for former President James E. Lyons, Sr. was held in the Ballroom of
the Loker Student Union on Feb. 26. Lyons had originally announced his
retirement last fall. However, in December, he was offered and accepted the
appointment of Secretary of Higher Education for the state of Maryland,
necessitating an early departure from CSU Dominguez Hills. Boice Bowman,
formerly the vice president of Student Affairs, is currently serving as interim
president of the University until a new president takes the helm.

135 Years of Service
CBAPP faculty celebrating five-year
anniversaries of service from five to 35 were honored at the annual Faculty
Awards Reception on Feb. 8 in the University Student Ballroom. In total,
they have a combined 165 years of service to the College and campus. Two
CBAPP professors, Jay Kaplan,
professor of
political science,
and Mel Auerbach, associate
professor of accounting and finance,
paced the list of awardees with 35 and 30 years respectively.

Advisory board member Marvin D.
Brown, who received his bachelor’s and master’s in public
administration from CSUDH, was appointed family law manager at the
Lamoreaux Justice Center in March. He left his post as an administrator
at the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, assigned to
the Long Beach Courthouse. As the administrator, his responsibilities
included oversight of Family Law Operations and the Self Help Center. He
also oversaw other departments including Civil, Small Claims, Probate,
Juror Services, Finance/ Budget, and Community Outreach. He has served
on various committees relating to family law, including the Family Law
Policy and Procedure Committee and the Family Law Automation Committee.
Brown began his tenure with the Los Angeles Courts in 1995.
