Steve Croft (B.S Business Administration, 1986) was elected to the Lakewood City Council in March. He previously served as chair of the Lakewood Planning and Environment Commission and vice chair of the Lakewood Unified School District Organizing Committee. Croft wants to keep a good relationship with the school districts that serve Bellflower students (Paramount, Long Beach, Bellflower and ABC), but would like to see Lakewood with its own school district. He also would like to maintain the single-family character of the city’s housing.

Freshman Stephanie Dozier, business administration, was one of three CSUDH students who provided a testimonial at the President’s Dinner, the University’s hallmark annual fundraising dinner, on March 25 about the value of her Presidential Scholarship. “I absolutely believe that students should pursue higher education,” she said. “It opens up worlds of new opportunities, particularly here, where everyone is so willing to work with you for your goals and to help you get to where you want to be.”

Patricia D. Ellis-Griggs (B.A. Political Science, 1989) assumed the role of president of the Houston Legal Assistants Association (HLAA) on April 1. With more than 700 members, HLAA promotes the professional advancement of legal assistants in Houston and is also the largest legal assistant association in Texas. Currently, Ellis-Griggs works as a senior paralegal in the Labor and Employment Law Practice Group with international law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P.

Raoul Freeman, professor and chair, Computer Information Systems, was named to the Editorial Board of the Journal of E-Government. The Journal is based at USC, with an editorial board that includes members from such universities as Harvard, Yale, Brown, UC Berkeley, and USC. Leading universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and Italy are also represented on the board.

Jerome E. Horton (B.S. Business Administration, 1979) was named the 2005 CSUDH Alumnus of the Year on March 17. A state assemblymember representing the 51st District (Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lennox, Lawndale, West Athens, Del Aire, Alondra Park, Gardena, West Compton and Playa Vista), he was first elected to the California State Assembly in November 2000 and won re-election in 2002. Previously, he worked for the State Board of Equalization for more than 20 years. Economic development seminars, mentoring high school students, and health care for every child are among the many programs he has implemented as assemblymember. He is the founder of the African-American Leadership Development Program, which targets outstanding African-American youth throughout the state and enables them to participate in a weeklong leadership training program.

Guy J. Witherspoon, Jr. (B.S. Computer Information Systems, 1991; M.A. Social and Behavioral Science, 1993; M.B.A., 2001) received the 2004 CSUDH Alumnus of the Year on March 17. The 2004 and 2005 awards were given during the same evening because no award ceremony was held last year. Witherspoon currently serves as the senior pastor of the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Los Angeles. In addition to being a triple graduate of CSUDH and a lifetime member of the Alumni Association, he has taught as an adjunct faculty member in the Behavioral Science Graduate Program, and he served the students of CSUDH through the Associated Students, Inc. from 1986 to 2004.
