Dean Strong Appointed to Millennium Momentum Foundation Board of Directors
The Millennium Momentum Foundation, a non-profit focused on increasing the number of young professionals from various ethnic backgrounds in public administration, public policy, and related fields, recently announced the appointment of CBAPP Dean James T. Strong to the organization’s Board of Directors.

Long Assumes Role of Executive Assistant to the President for Retiring Walton
Kathleen Walton recently retired from her role as President James E. Lyons, Sr.’s right-hand assistant. Virginia Long, who has worked at CSUDH since 1982, assumed her role at the start of the spring semester.

Newsmakers

Senior Zubair Ahmad, political science, is currently running for Bellflower City Council. With the election slated for March 8, several other political science students have helped run his campaign, and he has received support from a handful of CBAPP faculty members as well.

Javier Barragan (B.A. Public Administration, 2004) was selected by Club Deportivo Chivas USA on Feb. 4 in Major League Soccer's 2005 Supplemental Draft. During the 2002 and 2003 seasons, Barragan started 38 of 43 matches for CSUDH, registering an impressive 148 saves. During his 2003 campaign, Barragan led the entire California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a 0.62 goals against average. An All-CCAA selection in 2002, he finished his CSUDH career with 18 shutouts and 33 wins, which rank him third in the all-time Toro record books.

Mohammad Eyadat, assistant professor of computer information systems, had his research paper, titled "Performance Evaluation of an Incorporated DCT Block-Based Watermarking Algorithm with Human Visual System Model," accepted for publication in Pattern Recognition Letters Journal.

Raoul Freeman, professor and chair of computer information systems, was re-elected as chairman of the Information Systems Commission of Los Angeles County. The commission, a 10-member body appointed by the Board of Supervisors, provides counsel to the County's information technology activities, which have an annual budget in excess of $700 million. His fellow commission members have elected Freeman chairman for 10 consecutive years. He is the only academic professional who serves on the Commission. Freeman was also recently named to the Editorial Board of the Journal of E-Government. The Journal is based at USC, and the Editorial Board includes members from Harvard, Yale, Brown, UC Berkeley, and USC as well as leading universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Senior Todd Gaynor, public administration, is currently completing a 16-week training internship with the U.S. Marshal Service to become a deputy marshal. The paid internship prepares interns for the career of a deputy marshal, which entails court protection, prisoner custody and transportation, and warrant execution.

Graduate student Danielle Jenkins, public administration, attended the Annual Banquet Celebration of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), held at Los Angeles City Hall on January 31. The banquet was organized to attract and inspire graduate students to pursue a career in the field, introduce them to local agency officials for career opportunities, and celebrate achievements of ASPA members and their agencies.

Clarence Augustus Martin, professor of public administration and public policy, had his new book, titled "Juvenile Justice: Process and Systems," published by Sage Publications in February. Martin is currently revising his book on terrorism, "Understanding Terrorism: Challenges, Perspectives, and Issues," for the publication of its second edition in late 2005 or early 2006.

Franklin Strier
, professor of accounting and law, had two articles recently accepted for publication. The first, "How Our Fiduciary Institutions Have Betrayed Our Trust," will be published in the Journal of Legal, Ethical & Regulatory Issues and discusses current scandals in corporate boards, public accounting, mutual funds, brokerages, the New York Stock Exchange and the SEC. The second article, titled "Gene Patenting and Public Policy," will be published in Commentaries on Law and Public Policy and covers numerous public policy issues relating to the mapping of the human genome. Laura Robles, professor of biology, provided a valuable critique on the part of the article discussing microbiology.
