Arvizo Finds Success with Helping Hands
A year ago, Amanda Arvizo was a senior at Banning High within the International Trade Education Program (ITEP) Global Safety and Security Academy. Her grades were slipping, college was about the furthest thing from her mind, and it seemed she had nowhere to turn for help. Forced to leave her home, she has lived in five places in the past 12 months, but thanks to a support network pulled together from Banning, ITEP, CBAPP, and the Port of Los Angeles, she is now into her second semester at CSUDH with a very clear goal in front of her: become the first in her family to graduate from college. Her story is proof positive of what a network of caring individuals can do when coupled together with a healthy dose of individual persistence. Full story

10 Questions…on L.A. County’s Healthcare Funding Future with Gerardo Pinedo
From hospital closures to nursing shortages, many are hopeful that the inauguration of President Obama and talk of a healthcare component within a stimulus package will mean more funding for the County. Add Gerardo Pinedo (B.A. interdisciplinary studies/public administration, 2001), to that list. In November, Pinedo began his role as interim director of government relations and policy for the County’s Department of Health Services. Here, the man who helps coordinate the County’s healthcare lobbying efforts looks ahead to evaluate the likelihood of a new funding vein for the County as well as what needs to be done to fix the County’s other top healthcare issues.
