After rising through the ranks of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for 37 years, CBAPP advisory board member Gilbert Ivey now spends a lot of his time looking to give the same types of opportunities to others.
37 Years and Counting
When Gilbert Ivey started at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California back in 1970 at the age of 17, he was a chauffeur for women staff members who the organization didn’t trust to drive company cars themselves. It’s safe to say some things have changed at “Metropolitan.” Yet some have not – such as Ivey on the payroll. Now, some 37 years later, the organization’s chief administrative officer and one of the newest additions to the CBAPP advisory board continues to work for his first and only employer because he wants to develop and mentor young professionals within the organization, work that is also mirrored in his role on the advisory board. 10 Questions…on the Business of Non-Profits for Eldridge Huntington
CBAPP Lecturer Eldridge Huntington wrote his first grant in the late-1970s and has consulted with more than 20 non-profits since then. As the instructor of Intergovernmental Relations and Grant Writing on campus, he continues to stress to his students that running a non-profit is very much like running a business. Here, he explains the perils that await those who try to start and run non-profits as something other than businesses as well as a few lasting fundamental differences that separate non-profits from the bakery or shoe store down the street. A hint: it’s not the cash flow. Full story

Garcia Joins Carnegie Foundation Effort to Develop New Faculty Model
CSUDH President Mildred García was selected to participate in an ongoing collaboration that will explore how higher education faculty will need to transform to meet future challenges. This select group of scholars, education leaders, and representatives from The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching elected to engage in future dialogue after meeting at “Toward a Vision for the 21st Century Professoriate,” a conference held at The Carnegie Foundation in Stanford, Calif., last October. “Our faculty at Dominguez Hills is poised to role model the life of the 21st-century professor,” says García. “Our active participation in the endeavor will ensure that the committed excellent work of our faculty sets the agenda for the new model.”
