McNair Scholars Inducted
The CSUDH Ronald E. McNair Scholars Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program introduced its 2005-06 cohort in December, welcoming new students and their parents to the program and highlighting the achievements of current members. The new inductees included three CBAPP students.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA who are interested in pursuing doctorate studies are eligible to apply for the program, which includes a three-unit research methodology course, a ten-week summer internship, and the opportunity to present research findings at a minimum of two professional conferences. The CBAPP students inducted were all seniors: Georgina Escobar, accounting; Charmaine Long, English/public administration; and Abdel Sadik, business administration.

“When a student agrees to be part of the program, they are committing to pursuing graduate education,” says the program’s director, Jennifer Vega LaSerna. “We interview all of the students before accepting them into the program to determine their career and educational goals and they write a personal statement. We help motivate them by university visits, presentations from different graduate schools, and providing them with as much information as possible on graduate school life.”

The national program was authorized by Congress in 1986 in memory of Challenger astronaut Ronald Erwin McNair and is designed to help low-income, first-generation college students continue their education at the doctoral level. The program has been in existence at CSUDH for three years.
