Full story On Point: A True World Wide Web Larry Press, professor of computer information systems, has traveled the globe for years, working on bringing the Internet to developing nations and calling for a major project to bring connectivity to people all over the world – not just to those who can afford it, but to everyone, because it can improve people’s quality of life. Such a project would certainly be no small undertaking, but in the wake of the tsunami that ravaged south Asia, he says here that the time is ripe for such action. Full story CBAPP and Campus News In Memoriam: Former Alumna of the Year Leaves Legacy of Hope Charlotte Jan Bowman (M.P.A., 1980), founder of Charlotte’s House in Carson, passed away in early January after a long bout with breast cancer. Charlotte’s House – a transitional house for homeless women and their children – was founded by Bowman in 1994, earning her the 1998 Alumna of the Year Award. CBAPP Faculty Account for Half of University’s RSCAAP
Awardees Raoul Freeman, professor of computer information systems, was recently re-elected as chairman of the Information Systems Commission of Los Angeles County. The Commission, a ten-member body appointed by the Board of Supervisors, provides counsel and oversight to the county's information technology activities. This marks 10 straight years that his fellow Commission members have elected Freeman chairman. He is the only academic who serves on the Commission. Antoinette Lewis (B.S. Business Administration: Management and Human Resources, 2004) and senior Evelyn Long, business administration: management and human resources, recently secured full-time positions with Northrop Grumman’s Human Resources Department following their participation in the summer 2004 internship program. Lewis was recently hired as a contract employee, and Long was hired at her current pay rate with an understanding she will be promoted upon graduation. Richard Malamud,
professor of accounting and law, had his article, “How the
IRS Can Close the Online Auction Tax Gap,” published in the Jan. 3 issue of the
weekly Tax Notes. The article explains how the IRS can use Internal
Revenue Code section 6045 to collect more tax from Internet auctions and
traditional consignment sales by writing enabling regulations that require
auctioneers to report their activity, as is currently done for dividend and
interest income. Anita Willis (M.B.A., 1979) was appointed city attorney of the City of Inglewood in December. Her professional expertise includes legal and administrative counsel for the cities of Oceanside and Los Angeles, as well as the law offices of Mallory and Brown Curtis in Los Angeles. Willis received her Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern University School of Law in 1992 and was also admitted to the California Bar Association that year.
