With no clear frontrunner on either ticket, the 2008 primaries that began with the Democratic Iowa Caucus on Jan. 5 prove to be an interesting experiment in politics and campaigns. Yet, Professor of Political Science Alan Fisher explains that it’s not just the wide-open field that is different about 2008: a lengthened campaign season and shortened election window have major implications for who will be able to break away from the packs for the presidential election. Full story CBAPP and Campus NewsCSUDH Receives Renewed McNair FundingThe U.S. Department of Education has awarded California State University, Dominguez Hills a $1.1 million grant to continue the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program at the university for another four years beginning this academic year. The program’s goal is to encourage and prepare students who are traditionally under-represented in college to pursue graduate studies – specifically, the Ph.D. A number of CBAPP students have been involved with the program, including senior Ernesto Marinez, Jr., business administration, who was just invited into the program’s fifth cohort this fall. Full story Newsmakers Sang Ok Choi, assistant professor of public administration and public policy, co-authored an article, titled “Power and Cognitive Accuracy in Local Emergency Management Networks,” that was published in the December issue of Public Administration Review. Choi’s co-author was Bok-Tae Kim. Mohammed Eyadat, professor of information systems, served as a guest speaker at a meeting of the Coastal Los Angeles section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) on Nov. 29. His presentation focused on information security and digital water marking.
Jacqueline Seabrooks
(B.A. public administration, 1988) was recently appointed as the new chief of
police for the city of Inglewood, becoming the second woman ever to lead a
police department in Los Angeles County. Seabrooks took the reins of Inglewood’s
police department in October, following 24 years at the Santa Monica Police
Department, where she served as captain and acting chief of police. She also was
in charge of the department’s Office of Criminal Investigations.
