10 Questions…on California’s
Educational Divide for Patrick Kelly
As a senior
associate at the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS),
Patrick Kelly recently completed a major analysis of national population and
education trends. What he found is that as minority populations continue to
grow, their level of education is not following suit, and the situation is most
critical in California. He explains here how we’ll all suffer if the trends
continue to 2020, and what we can do now to make sure they change direction.

On Point: The Death Penalty
Backlog
Twenty-four years
passed before Stanley “Tookie” Williams' death sentence was carried out.In the process, he became just the twelfth person on death row to be
executed in California since the ultimate punishment was legalized in 1977.
Here, Assistant Professor of Public Administration Theodore P. Byrne, who worked
as a trial lawyer for 12 years before beginning his full-time teaching career,
explains why the appeals process takes so long and how the rising number of
death row inmates – now tallying 646 – represents an almost impossible challenge
for the California legal system.

Newsmakers
Graduate student David Gamboa,
public administration, now works as a field representative in the office
of Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-37th District). Gamboa received
his bachelor’s degree in communications from CSUDH in 2005 while working
tirelessly as campus’ Associated Students, Inc. president. Shifting focus from a
planned career in broadcasting to one in public service, his ultimate goal is to
become city manager for Montebello, the town in which he grew up.
Ernie Klinger,
executive vice president of business development and CFO of It’s a Grind, a
chain of coffee houses with franchises in 11 states, was recently appointed the
chair of the Business Advisory Board’s Executive Committee.
Richard Malamud,
professor of accounting and law, had his article, “Start the tick-tock
of the five-year clock by contributing to a Roth,” published in the Dec. 1 issue
of Spidell’s Elder Client Planner. The article addresses the tax
advantage of opening a Roth IRA earlier then normal so that it can be used as a
vehicle for short-term investments when nearing retirement age.

Gus Siekierka, vice president of human resources for Computer
Sciences Corporation, recently joined CBAPP’s Business Advisory Board. Siekierka
moved to the area upon his promotion to vice president in November. With 78,000
employees, CSC is the world’s third largest provider of information technology
services.
J. Rae Walker, M.D., president of Axiom Medical, recently joined CBAPP’s
Business Advisory Board. Based in Rancho Dominguez and in business for more than
25 years, Axiom manufactures and distributes silicone disposable tubing,
catheters, cannulae drains, collection devices and surgical accessories.
