in America CBAPP and Campus News Newsmakers Robin Bittick, associate professor of public administration, had two papers published in the 2004 edition of International Business Trends: Contemporary Readings, titled “Social Equity and Property Rights: Bringing Locke Back into the Debate” and “Institutional Credibility: Connecting Ethical Public Administration with a Nation’s Institutional Environment.” He also co-authored a paper that appeared in the Summer 2004 issue of Public Integrity, titled “The Squeaky Wheel Approach to Teaching Ethics: The Unethical Complaint Letter as a Pedagogical Tool.” Margaret Blue, associate professor of political science, served as a member of the panel discussion, titled “CSU Program for Occupational Students Using Distance Education via Satellite” at the fall conference of the California Community Colleges Association of Occupational Educators on Oct. 8. Guy Fox, a member of the Dean’s Business Advisory Board and executive vice president of Stonepath Logistics, delivered four presentations at the Japan-U.S. Cities Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, Nov. 15-20, upon the invitation of the Japanese Government, the Japan External Trade Organization, and the City of Hiroshima. Fox, who served as an emissary for Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn and Torrance Mayor Dan Walker during the visit, also met privately with the Mayor of Hiroshima. Fox’s presentation dealt with how to set up and maintain successful relationships and partnerships between Japanese and American businesses for mutual benefit. Jo Purcell (M.P.A., 1991) recently retired from her position as the city clerk of Rancho Palos Verdes after 29 years of service. “Since coming to work I have had the great fortune to work with dedicated staff and city councils, and have been privileged to meet and serve many of the City’s fine residents,” she wrote in a letter to Mayor Peter Gardiner, City Council Members and City Manager Les Evans. Junior Rashina Young, public administration, was selected as the first CBAPP student to join the McNair Scholars Program on Dec. 7. As one of 22 CSUDH students involved in the program, Young will take a special research course next semester and complete a full-time research project this summer under the guidance of a public administration faculty mentor with the intent of subsequently presenting her research at a professional conference next year. Now in its second year on campus, the McNair Scholars program is a national program geared toward assisting first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students pursue their doctorate and subsequently teach at the university level. As a McNair Scholar, Young will be eligible for a number of fellowships and other benefits in applying to graduate schools across the country. Senior Tsebaot Rediet, business administration: accounting, was recently selected to the Boeing Satellite Systems Internship Program for the Spring 2005 semester. Rediet, who previously served as the president of CSUDH’s Accounting Society, will complete her internship in Boeing’s Finance Division in El Segundo.
