Sports Entertainment & Hospitality Management
Because of the high demand for Sports, Entertainment and Hospitality (SEH) business professionals, the California State University Chancellor directed CSUDH to establish a new major in SEH. This will allow CSUDH to capitalize on its unique geographic location as well as its partnership with the high profile, high-caliber Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). AEG’s business portfolio includes some of the biggest names and brands which can help raise the profile of the DH campus and offer students exposure to world-class hospitality, sporting and entertainment events. The recruitment of superstar soccer player David Beckham to the L. A. Galaxy is attracting massive media attention and creating a publicity opportunity for SEH.
The CSUDH campus houses the Home Depot Center (HDC), a unique $150 million 125-acre combination of four sports facilities for soccer, tennis, track and field, and in-door Olympic cycling, as well as the CSUDH baseball field. The HDC is the home of two of Major League Soccer’s most prestigious teams, the L.A. Galaxy and Chivas USA. At the same site, AEG also plans to build an upscale hotel for sports stars and corporate team-building.
CSUDH President Garcia wants to promote this diverse urban university and develop its college life that includes the community, HDC and a culture of soccer-loving fans.
SEH is a specialized program in several rapidly growing industries - the number of positions for SEH majors is expected to grow by 14% nationwide by 2014 and the average starting salary for an SEH position was $25,700 in 2006 (according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
SEH majors will have the opportunity to apply their skills as interns in sports centers, resorts, hotels, clubs and restaurants. Possible internships for the CSUDH SEH Program are:
Home Depot Center and its sponsors such as Herbalife Walt Disney World College Program
IMG
Cruise ships out of LA/ San Pedro/San Diego harbors
Anaheim convention center
Disneyland
Universal Studios
Knotts Berry Farm
One of the prominent golf courses and country clubs in greater LA
One of the myriad LA hotel chains and restaurants
Scholarships are available for SEH majors.
The CSUDH SEH program is unique as it offers three components: Sports, Entertainment and Hospitality.
CSUDH’s SEH program’s competitive advantage is its location:
The greater Los Angeles area is the entertainment capital of the world.
CSUDH’s SEH program is the right place at the right time:
“What you have in front of you is challenging but very exciting ... Southern California is such a hub for sports from traditional teams and facilities, such as the Lakers, Clippers, Kings, Angels, Dodgers, Ducks, Staples Center, Anaheim Stadium and Honda Center to new sports and facilities, such as the LA Avengers, Home Depot Center, LA Galaxy, California Speedway, and Long Beach Grand Prix. I don’t think any school or program has tapped into the abundant resources here.”
